Images of skulls often appear in my quilts. My interest in human anatomy in general and skulls in particular began in childhood. In high school, I would stay after school to create ink drawings of skulls from the anthropology classroom. Upon graduation, I was accepted into a medical illustration program, but I was unable to attend. Instead, I earned my BFA and MFA in Fiber Art, producing medically-themed quilts. Over time, my depictions of skulls have become an alter ego of sorts, and evolved into a universal symbol of humanity. They symbolize our strength and our ephemeral nature as human beings.
